Located next to the busy corner of Spring Mountain Rd. and Las Vegas Blvd. across from the Mirage, it is easily identified by its beautifully carved exterior and a large obelisk. It is likely the closest you’ll get to Venice within the United States, complete with gondolas ferrying visitors up and down the indoor and outdoor streams. It is also home of Blue Man Group. This unique comedy show does not have much to do with Venice but it is far and away the most original premise for a comedy show you’ve ever seen.
Unlike a lot of other recurring large Vegas shows, there aren’t any acrobatics, death defying acts, or elaborate costumes, just three blue guys and some props. It is described as part art and part crazy science experiment, and the performance is accompanied by a percussion driven soundtrack. The blue men don’t speak but use their eyes and facial expressions to evoke a response from the audience. Some of the highlights of the unorthodox show include art created via the blue men drumming on paint against a canvas and an elaborate scene involving PVC pipes as a screen explains how, not through the internet or communications, but through plumbing the world is becoming more interconnected.
Mathew Banks, a director and performer who has been with the show for 8 years describes the character as “part dog, part five-year-old and part hero” or “part shaman, part trickster and part scientist.” Whatever the case, it is unusual and quite fascinating. There are actually several Blue Man Groups throughout the world, the show in Vegas is actually 8 individuals who rotate their schedule.
